Blood in Moscow: The Idaho Four Murders

Blood in Moscow: The Idaho Four Murders

Four young lives cut short in the dead of night. A masked intruder stalking through a college house while survivors froze in fear. A criminology PhD student who may have been studying his own crime.

The November 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle rocked the small town of Moscow, Idaho and captivated the nation's attention. What should have been an ordinary Saturday night for these University of Idaho students ended in unimaginable tragedy when they were stabbed to death in their beds between 4:00-4:25 AM.

What makes this case particularly haunting isn't just the brutality of the attack, but the eight-hour delay before anyone called 911—despite two roommates surviving in the house, one of whom even saw the masked killer. The psychological impact of fear, the developmental neuroscience of young adult decision-making, and the surreal nature of encountering violence in what should be a safe space all contributed to a paralysis that may have cost precious time.

When authorities finally arrested 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger, the evidence was compelling: DNA on a knife sheath left at the scene, cell phone pings near the victims' house, surveillance footage of his car circling the neighborhood, and Amazon records showing he purchased a Ka-Bar style knife months earlier. Yet the most chilling aspect remains the lack of a clear motive—was it a thrill kill by someone studying criminal behavior? A rejected romantic advance? A calculated experiment?

As the case heads to trial in August 2025, the prosecution seeks the death penalty while defense attorneys challenge evidence collection methods and search warrant validity. Meanwhile, four families continue seeking justice and answers about why their beloved children were taken so senselessly.

What would you do if you came face-to-face with a masked intruder in your home? The psychology of fear and fight-or-flight responses plays out in this true crime case that feels more like a nightmare than reality.

This horrible crime has affected all of us Four University of Idaho students murdered in a house near campus.

00:00:53.576 --> 00:00:56.325
These girls were absolutely beautiful.

00:00:56.325 --> 00:00:59.131
They've been friends since sixth grade.

It's a shame and it hurts.

00:01:01.323 --> 00:01:09.725
Some feared the murders of Maddie Mogan, Kaylee Gonsalves, Ethan Chapin and Zanna Kernodle would never be solved.

00:01:09.725 --> 00:01:13.445
Who would want to hurt these four students sleeping in their house?

00:01:13.445 --> 00:01:16.810
The answer, police would later say, was this man.

00:01:16.810 --> 00:01:20.772
This is State of Idaho versus Brian C Koberger.

00:01:20.772 --> 00:01:26.426
Brian Koberger, a PhD student in criminology who lived 10 miles away.

00:01:26.426 --> 00:01:27.429
But why?

00:01:27.429 --> 00:01:36.352
That's just one of so many questions that remain more than one year later, as we remember the four Idaho students taken too soon.

00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:40.248
Welcome back to 69 South everybody.

00:01:40.248 --> 00:01:41.343

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in today.

00:01:49.465 --> 00:01:57.468
Today we're tackling a case that has been haunting headlines and true crime junkies alike the Idaho Four murders in Moscow.

00:01:57.468 --> 00:02:03.292
Idaho Four college kids, a quiet town and a mystery that's still unfolding as we speak.

00:02:03.819 --> 00:02:11.586
Yeah, this one's got it all Stabbings in the dead of night, a criminology student turned suspect, and enough twists to keep you up late Googling.

00:02:11.586 --> 00:02:16.692
We're recording this in March of 2025, so we've got the latest updates to share.

00:02:16.692 --> 00:02:18.706
Buckle up, because it's going to be a good one.

00:02:19.259 --> 00:02:27.640
Now, before we jump in a quick heads up, this case involves some heavy stuff violence, loss and a community still reeling.

00:02:27.640 --> 00:02:30.129
We'll keep it real but respectful.

00:02:30.129 --> 00:02:32.076
Are you ready to set the scene?

00:02:32.076 --> 00:02:32.919
I was born ready.

00:02:33.801 --> 00:02:37.408
Let's take it back to november of 2022 in moscow, idaho.

00:02:37.408 --> 00:02:40.962
It's a small college town, home to the university of idaho.

00:02:40.962 --> 00:02:47.402
You can picture it pretty much in your head Tree-lined streets, cozy rentals and a vibe pretty chill.

00:02:47.402 --> 00:02:51.091
So chill that they hadn't had a murder since 2015.

00:02:51.091 --> 00:02:53.502
That all changed on November 13th.

00:02:55.084 --> 00:02:59.471
So it's the early hours of November 13th, 2022.

00:02:59.471 --> 00:03:06.312
Four University of Idaho students are in an off-campus rental house at 1122 King Road.

00:03:06.312 --> 00:03:13.891
This place is like a classic college setup it's three stories, has six bedrooms, a little warm, but full life.

00:03:13.891 --> 00:03:21.854
Now five women live there, but that night only two roommates were home alongside the four who'd become the victims.

00:03:22.502 --> 00:03:24.068
Let's talk about the victims first.

00:03:24.068 --> 00:03:26.641
Four who'd become the victims?

00:03:26.641 --> 00:03:27.383
Let's talk about the victims first.

00:03:27.383 --> 00:03:30.368
First we got Madison Mogan and Zanna Kernudel, both 20 years old, who lived in the house.

00:03:30.368 --> 00:03:35.225
Maddie and Zanna worked together at a local restaurant pretty tight-knit friends.

00:03:35.225 --> 00:03:43.885
Then there's Kaylee Gonzalez, 21, who just moved out but came back to hang out for a party nearby.

00:03:43.885 --> 00:03:48.655
And finally Ethan Chapin, who's also 20, zanna's boyfriend.

00:03:48.655 --> 00:03:50.627
He was crashing there for the night also.

00:03:51.421 --> 00:03:54.120
Now these kids were living the college dream.

00:03:54.120 --> 00:04:07.188
Earlier that night, ethan and Zanna hit up the Sigma Chi frat party on campus, while Kaylee and Maddie Maddie being Kaylee's lifelong bestie went out to a bar called the Corner Club.

00:04:07.188 --> 00:04:13.252
They grabbed some late-night grub from a food truck and headed back around 1.45 am.

00:04:13.252 --> 00:04:18.232
Everyone is home by 2 am and it's quiet until it's not.

00:04:18.740 --> 00:04:29.271
Yeah, because sometime between 4 and 4.25 am somebody slips into that house with a big old fixed blade knife Think military style, like a K-bar, and goes to town.

00:04:29.271 --> 00:04:33.911
Four kids stabbed to death multiple times, mostly in their beds.

00:04:33.911 --> 00:04:38.091
Autopsies later showed some had defensive wounds, meaning they fought back.

00:04:38.091 --> 00:04:42.911
No sexual assault, no tying up, just brutal targeted violence.

00:04:43.482 --> 00:04:44.446
And here's the kicker.

00:04:44.446 --> 00:04:49.612
Two other roommates, bethany and Dylan, were in the house and they survived.

00:04:49.612 --> 00:05:01.235
Dylan actually woke up around 4 am, heard crying, opened her door and saw a masked guy in black walking toward the back sliding door.

00:05:01.235 --> 00:05:03.406
She completely froze.

00:05:03.406 --> 00:05:09.983
He didn't see her or didn't care, and then she locked herself in her room.

00:05:09.983 --> 00:05:19.824
Eight hours later, at 1158 AM, one of their phones calls 911 about an unconscious person.

00:05:19.824 --> 00:05:21.547
Eight hours.

00:05:22.829 --> 00:05:27.355
That seems a little bit weird, but they were texting each other, hitting up social media.

00:05:27.355 --> 00:05:33.208
Even one met his family saying she had saw a masked dude, but no one called the cops till noon.

00:05:33.208 --> 00:05:36.028
That's one of those head scratchers we'll unpack later, though.

00:05:36.682 --> 00:05:40.665
The scene was chaos when the police rolled up Blood everywhere.

00:05:40.665 --> 00:05:47.690
Four kids gone and a dog Kaylee's pup unharmedmed, just chilling on the third floor.

00:05:47.690 --> 00:06:01.367
Moscow, pd, idaho, state police and the fbi jump in and the town's like what the hell just happened now moscow's a small place, about 25 000 people max, so this hits hard.

00:06:01.788 --> 00:06:07.882
Chief James Fry got almost 130 law enforcement folks on this combining through tips.

00:06:07.882 --> 00:06:15.867
At first they're like no threat to the community, but three days later Fry's backtracking yeah, we can't say that anymore.

00:06:15.867 --> 00:06:17.291
And then the panic set in.

00:06:18.281 --> 00:06:27.454
They've got no murder weapon, but they do find a tan leather K-bar knife sheath on Maddie's bed right next to her body.

00:06:27.454 --> 00:06:29.084
That's clue number one.

00:06:29.084 --> 00:06:41.910
Then surveillance footage from the neighborhood shows a white Hyundai Elantra cruising by the house multiple times 3.29 am, 4.04 am, then peeling out.

00:06:41.910 --> 00:06:45.588
At 4.20 am Cops start hunting for that car.

00:06:46.293 --> 00:06:48.401
Now fast forward to December 15th.

00:06:48.401 --> 00:06:56.863
Over a month later, they're chasing down 22,000 fifth-generation Elantras made between 2011 and 2013.

00:06:56.863 --> 00:07:08.908
Well, one pops up in Pullman Washington, eight miles away, registered to a 28-year-old PhD student at Washington State University named Brian Christopher Koberger.

00:07:09.521 --> 00:07:12.230
This guy's a character straight out of a crime novel.

00:07:12.230 --> 00:07:19.528
He's studying criminology ironic right and just finished his first trimester at WSU.

00:07:19.528 --> 00:07:23.779
He moved there in the summer of 2022.

00:07:23.779 --> 00:07:35.355
He lives in a student apartment and get this his phone pinged near the victim's house at least 12 times since June, mostly late at night.

00:07:35.355 --> 00:07:45.014
On November 13th it's off from 2.47 am to 4.48 am, then tracks back to Pullman.

00:07:46.060 --> 00:07:55.112
Then, december 30th, boom FBI and Pennsylvania State Police raid hits his parents' place in the Poconos, 2,500 miles away.

00:07:55.112 --> 00:07:59.791
They attract him there after he drove cross-country with his dad for the holidays.

00:07:59.791 --> 00:08:04.271
Swat team rolls in, snipers on standby and they nab his ass.

00:08:04.271 --> 00:08:09.612
Trash from the house gets tested and his DNA matches the sheath that he left at the crime scene.

00:08:11.079 --> 00:08:19.175
January 3rd 2023, he's extradited to Idaho charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.

00:08:19.175 --> 00:08:35.789
Nobel, locked up in the Latah County Jail, cops also find he'd bought a K-Bar knife and a sharpener on Amazon months before, and a surviving roommate described the intruder as having quote unquote bushy eyebrows.

00:08:35.789 --> 00:08:38.575
A detail that kind of fits Koberger.

00:08:39.341 --> 00:08:51.528
Now all the evidence is stacking up DNA, the same kind of car phone records, but the motive, that's still a big weird thing that they haven't figured out yet, Like a big fat question mark on the case.

00:08:51.528 --> 00:08:52.822
Did he know them?

00:08:52.822 --> 00:08:54.107
I mean, was it random?

00:08:54.107 --> 00:08:56.206
We're still in the dark at this point.

00:08:57.581 --> 00:09:00.379
So Koberger's arraigned in May of 2023.

00:09:00.379 --> 00:09:06.110
He stands silent, so the judge enters not guilty pleas for him.

00:09:06.110 --> 00:09:10.644
Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty if he's convicted.

00:09:10.644 --> 00:09:14.211
Big stakes are on the line now.

00:09:14.211 --> 00:09:24.793
The trial is set for october of 2023, but his defense isn't ready, so he waves his speedy trial right, pushing it back.

00:09:33.059 --> 00:09:34.023
Fast forward to 2024.

00:09:34.023 --> 00:09:34.666
Tons of pre-trial drama.

00:09:34.666 --> 00:09:36.994
His team's fighting the two-toss-to-DNA evidence, saying it's from a shady genetic genealogy methods.

00:09:36.994 --> 00:09:40.482
They're also mad about search warrants claiming police misconduct.

00:09:40.482 --> 00:09:47.315
Hearings in January 2025 get superheated, but Judge Stephen Hippler keeps most of it sealed.

00:09:47.315 --> 00:09:49.923
No rulings yet as of today.

00:09:51.126 --> 00:10:13.187
Then there's the venue fight Moscow's small, and Koberger's lawyers argued that the media frenzy 70% of locals think he's guilty per a survey means no fair trial there In September of 2024, a judge agrees to move it 300 miles south to Boise in Ada County.

00:10:13.187 --> 00:10:23.908
A new judge, a new trial, and the trial is now set for August 11th to November 7th of 2025.

00:10:24.529 --> 00:10:27.514
Oh, and the house was the crime scene.

00:10:27.514 --> 00:10:31.828
They tore that down in 2023 after the owner gifted it to the university.

00:10:31.828 --> 00:10:33.946
A healing step, they called it.

00:10:33.946 --> 00:10:36.489
Meanwhile, the defense hints at an alibi.

00:10:36.489 --> 00:10:38.407
Maybe Kohlberger was elsewhere.

00:10:38.407 --> 00:10:41.668
They even float that the sheath DNA was planted.

00:10:41.668 --> 00:10:43.926
Prosecutors are like nah.

00:10:43.926 --> 00:10:45.350
Jury can decide that.

00:10:46.134 --> 00:10:57.561
Now the latest updates as of March 2025, new surveillance video drops showing Koberger's alleged stalker route that night.

00:10:57.561 --> 00:11:03.274
Now posts on X are buzzing about it, mapping out how he circled the house.

00:11:03.274 --> 00:11:06.701
No official confirmation yet, but it's got people talking.

00:11:07.482 --> 00:11:10.349
This case is a hamster wheel of motions and delays.

00:11:10.349 --> 00:11:12.573
Kaylee's family are pissed about it.

00:11:12.573 --> 00:11:16.913
They're crowdfunding to attend the trial set for this summer.

00:11:16.913 --> 00:11:20.481
It's a circus, Julie, and we're still waiting for the main event.

00:11:21.624 --> 00:11:23.447
All right, Chobb, let's chew on this.

00:11:23.447 --> 00:11:26.272
Why these four students?

00:11:26.932 --> 00:11:27.433
I don't know.

00:11:27.433 --> 00:11:28.562
I was wondering that.

00:11:28.562 --> 00:11:34.125
I mean you look at the dude and he's kind of I mean I'm not trying to be mean, but he's kind of nerdy looking.

00:11:34.125 --> 00:11:39.761
I wonder if one of these you know pretty college girls maybe shot him down or at some point.

00:11:40.062 --> 00:11:44.125
I think they said he is on the autism spectrum as well too.

00:11:44.145 --> 00:11:45.788
I think they said he is on the autism spectrum as well too.

00:11:45.788 --> 00:11:55.576
As of right now they're kind of claiming that he didn't know right from wrong or something along that line, like they're just playing the not smart enough tip.

00:11:59.500 --> 00:12:06.967
But the dude had a PhD and he was going to school for criminology and that makes you think, you know, did he pick them to study his own crime?

00:12:06.967 --> 00:12:10.812
Was it personal One's theory that he stalked them?

00:12:10.812 --> 00:12:14.035
You know the phone pings in the car circling their house.

00:12:20.600 --> 00:12:22.730
Maybe he snapped after getting canned as a teaching assistant at WSU days before his arrest.

00:12:22.730 --> 00:12:24.299
I mean, or maybe it was just random like a thrill kill.

00:12:24.299 --> 00:12:27.888
The dude's got a master's from DeSales University.

00:12:27.888 --> 00:12:35.452
He studied under a forensic psychologist, even posted on Reddit asking ex-cons about their crimes.

00:12:35.452 --> 00:12:37.203
He's got the brain for it.

00:12:37.203 --> 00:12:44.768
But then there's this wild card a 2021 home invasion in Pullman Masked guy, knife early morning.

00:12:44.768 --> 00:12:45.208
Sound.

00:12:45.208 --> 00:12:50.331
Familiar Cops cleared him, but the defense might use that to point to someone else.

00:12:50.942 --> 00:12:55.600
The surviving roommates add another layer eight hours to call 911.

00:12:55.600 --> 00:13:03.308
Were they in shock or scared the killer'd come back and that knife sheath sloppy to leave it.

00:13:03.308 --> 00:13:04.552
Unless it was on purpose.

00:13:04.552 --> 00:13:07.225
What do you think?

00:13:09.140 --> 00:13:21.293
I think that when Brian Kohlberger got halfway back to his house and he was looking for that knife sheet, I bet he was smacking himself in the forehead saying stupid, stupid, stupid.

00:13:21.293 --> 00:13:24.988
I mean I think it was an accident, no way he left that shit there on purpose.

00:13:24.988 --> 00:13:31.150
Oh no, Gut says he did it, but the why is kind of murky for me.

00:13:31.150 --> 00:13:35.245
Evidence is tight, DNA don't lie, but the defense is scrappy.

00:13:35.245 --> 00:13:42.783
I think the guy who got off I think this guy kind of maybe got off on control and this was his messed up experiment or something.

00:13:42.783 --> 00:13:43.504
What do you think?

00:13:44.206 --> 00:13:49.982
I mean Eileen guilty too, but that eight hour gap just bugs me for some reason.

00:13:49.982 --> 00:13:51.065
And no murder weapon.

00:13:51.065 --> 00:13:52.386
Maybe it's still out there.

00:13:52.386 --> 00:13:57.475
This trial is going to hinge on the DNA and that car footage.

00:13:57.475 --> 00:14:02.312
Either way, moscow's scarred for life.

00:14:02.312 --> 00:14:07.533
The families, the school, the whole vibe out there has changed completely.

00:14:08.019 --> 00:14:10.087
Yeah, it's a pretty heavy vibe out there on this.

00:14:10.087 --> 00:14:18.351
Ethan Santa, maddie and Kaylee they were just little kids, man, basically not little kids, but to me they were just kids in college.

00:14:18.351 --> 00:14:22.090
Whatever happens, justice better show up in Boise.

00:14:22.090 --> 00:14:25.508
I want to listen to that 911 call with you guys.

00:14:25.508 --> 00:14:31.172
Let you hear it and then we'll talk about that for a minute, because that has me kind of thinking about stuff a little bit.

00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:36.254
All right, here it is stuff a little bit All right, here it is 11.55 am.

00:14:38.100 --> 00:14:40.030
42, 2nd November 13, 2022.

00:14:40.030 --> 00:14:43.168
I'm on location of your emergency.

00:14:43.168 --> 00:14:45.126
Hi, something is happening.

00:14:45.126 --> 00:14:46.945
Something happened in our house.

00:14:46.945 --> 00:14:47.849
We don't know what.

00:14:47.849 --> 00:14:49.081
What is?

00:14:49.100 --> 00:14:54.998
the address of the emergency 112.

00:15:07.700 --> 00:15:08.081
No, no, no emergency.

00:15:08.081 --> 00:15:09.346
What is the rest of the address?

00:15:09.346 --> 00:15:09.647
Oh, King Road.

00:15:09.647 --> 00:15:10.690
Okay, and is that a house or an apartment?

00:15:10.690 --> 00:15:10.990
It's a house.

00:15:10.990 --> 00:15:12.677
Can you repeat the address to make sure that I have it right?

00:15:12.677 --> 00:15:15.842
I'll talk to you guys.

00:15:15.842 --> 00:15:18.046
We live at the White, so we're next to them.

00:15:18.046 --> 00:15:26.417
I need someone to repeat the address for verification the address 1122 King Road.

00:15:26.417 --> 00:15:31.599
Tell me exactly what's going on.

00:15:31.599 --> 00:15:38.259
One of the roommates has passed out and she was drunk drunk last night and she's not waking up.

00:15:38.259 --> 00:15:42.503
Okay, oh, and they saw some man in their house last night.

00:15:42.503 --> 00:15:43.123
Yeah, Hi, this is Ann Ann.

00:15:43.123 --> 00:15:44.043
Are you with the patient?

00:15:44.043 --> 00:15:45.705
Okay, I need someone to keep the phone.

00:15:45.705 --> 00:15:46.966
Stop passing it around.

00:15:46.966 --> 00:15:48.988
Can I just tell you what happened?

00:15:48.988 --> 00:15:49.989
Pretty much.

00:15:50.009 --> 00:15:51.669
What is going on currently.

00:15:51.669 --> 00:15:53.091
Has someone passed out right now?

00:15:53.091 --> 00:15:56.332
I don't really know, but pretty much at 4 am.

00:15:56.332 --> 00:15:58.595
Okay, I need to know what's going on right now.

00:15:58.595 --> 00:16:00.616
If someone has passed out, can you find that out?

00:16:00.616 --> 00:16:14.474
Yeah, I'll come, come on, but we've got to go check, but we have to.

00:16:14.474 --> 00:16:17.879
Did you pass out?

00:16:17.879 --> 00:16:34.666
No, she's not waking up.

00:16:34.666 --> 00:16:37.029
Okay, one moment, I'm getting help started that way.

00:16:37.029 --> 00:16:39.472
Okay, and how old is she?

00:16:39.472 --> 00:16:54.062
Um, she's 20.

00:16:54.062 --> 00:16:54.605
20, you said yes, 20.

00:16:54.605 --> 00:16:54.947
Okay, hello, hello.

00:16:54.947 --> 00:16:56.919
Okay, I need someone to stop passing the phone around because I've talked to four different people.

00:16:56.919 --> 00:16:58.822
Okay, sorry, they just gave me the phone.

00:16:59.102 --> 00:16:59.403
Is she?

00:16:59.423 --> 00:16:59.845
breathing?

00:16:59.845 --> 00:17:03.289
Hello, is she breathing?

00:17:03.289 --> 00:17:11.944
No, okay, okay, bethany, I need you to talk to them.

00:17:11.944 --> 00:17:14.035
Okay, I can't talk to them, but I need you to talk to them.

00:17:14.035 --> 00:17:15.019
Hello, okay, bethany, I need you to talk to them.

00:17:15.019 --> 00:17:17.145
Okay, I can't talk to them, but I need you to talk to them.

00:17:17.145 --> 00:17:24.067
Okay, hello, okay, I have already sent the ambulance and law enforcement.

00:17:24.067 --> 00:17:25.090
Stay on the line.

00:17:25.090 --> 00:17:28.875
If there is a defibrillator available, send someone to get it now and tell me when you have it.

00:17:28.875 --> 00:17:33.214
Say that again there's a police here right now.

00:17:33.214 --> 00:17:38.147
Okay, if there is a defibrillator available, send someone to get it now and tell me when you have it.

00:17:38.147 --> 00:17:45.226
Do you have a defibrillator?

00:17:45.226 --> 00:17:46.048
Yes, we have one.

00:17:46.048 --> 00:17:48.211
Are you talking to the officer?

00:17:48.211 --> 00:17:53.529
Yes, okay, I'm going to let you go, since he's there with you and can help you.

00:17:53.690 --> 00:17:54.211
Okay, thank you.

00:17:54.993 --> 00:17:57.583
Bye, okay, you go, since he's there with you and can help you, okay.

00:17:57.583 --> 00:17:58.144
Thank you, okay, man.

00:17:58.144 --> 00:17:59.006
Listen to that just gives me chills, man.

00:17:59.145 --> 00:18:21.213
You can just hear the panic and the fear the fear in the poor kids yeah, but what's weird to me is that the there was two victims in each room and a total of four victims, but you don't hear them talking about another girl passed out, or I mean I don't even get how they say passed out.

00:18:21.655 --> 00:18:38.724
The way the police described the murder scene was like a bloodbath I bet, for one, she was in shock for sure, and for two, maybe there was a blanket covering her where the knife wound was, or maybe the other bedroom was where the bloody mess was.

00:18:38.724 --> 00:18:41.411
But it had to be a bloody mess regardless.

00:18:41.672 --> 00:18:52.486
Yeah, Now we've walked through the night of November 13th 2022, the Idaho four murders in Moscow, Idaho, and now we have Brian Kohlberger in the hot seat.

00:18:52.486 --> 00:18:59.069
But there's one piece of the puzzle that keeps us all up tonight, and that's the surviving roommates, Dylan and Bethany.

00:18:59.069 --> 00:19:09.119
Dylan saw a masked guy, presumably Kohlberger, walking through the house, and yet it took eight hours for anyone to call 911.

00:19:09.119 --> 00:19:13.810
I want to break this down minute by minute to figure out what the hell happened.

00:19:14.621 --> 00:19:17.210
Yeah, babe, this part is a mind bender.

00:19:17.210 --> 00:19:26.750
I mean you got four kids stabbed to death upstairs, blood literally seeping through the walls, two roommates downstairs who don't dial 911 help till noon.

00:19:26.750 --> 00:19:30.451
I mean I'd be screaming bloody murder, pun intended.

00:19:30.451 --> 00:19:32.707
Let's set the clock and walk through it.

00:19:33.500 --> 00:19:35.127
So let's start at 4 am.

00:19:35.127 --> 00:19:54.174
That's the key moment.

00:19:54.174 --> 00:19:56.718
Let's set the clock with her dog upstairs.

00:19:56.718 --> 00:20:03.232
Then she hears what she thinks is crying from Zanna's room on the same floor.

00:20:03.232 --> 00:20:11.411
Now prosecutors say Zanna got a DoorDash order at 4 am and she's on TikTok until 4.12.

00:20:11.411 --> 00:20:13.046
So she's still alive.

00:20:13.046 --> 00:20:24.929
Then the murders happened between 4 and 4-25 am, based on an audio from a neighbor's security camera picking up a scream at 4-17.

00:20:25.470 --> 00:20:31.765
So it's 4-17, the chaos point scream goes off Kohlberger's allegedly finishing up.

00:20:31.765 --> 00:20:37.855
Dylan cracks the door open first time because he hears someone say there's someone here.

00:20:37.855 --> 00:20:40.969
She peeks out, sees nothing, then shuts it.

00:20:40.969 --> 00:20:48.094
The second time she hears crying in a dude's voice, probably Kohlberger, saying it's okay, I'm going to help you.

00:20:48.094 --> 00:20:49.826
That's creepy as hell, julie.

00:20:49.826 --> 00:20:51.445
Third time's the charm.

00:20:51.445 --> 00:20:54.411
She opens the door again and bam, there he is.

00:20:54.411 --> 00:20:56.032
Third time's the charm.

00:20:56.032 --> 00:20:57.013
She opens the door again and bam, there he is.

00:20:57.013 --> 00:21:00.277
Black clothes, mask, bushy eyebrows, strolling past her toward the backsliding door.

00:21:01.201 --> 00:21:08.531
This is around 4.20 am, based on that white Hyundai Elantra peeling out on camera at 4.20.

00:21:08.531 --> 00:21:19.355
Dylan is face-to-face with this guy and she describes him as 5'10" athletic, not too bulky, and she is completely frozen.

00:21:19.355 --> 00:21:25.288
She doesn't scream, she doesn't run, she just locks her door and stays put.

00:21:25.288 --> 00:21:30.652
Court filings say she's in a shock phase like a deer in headlights.

00:21:30.652 --> 00:21:40.365
Next thing we know she's texting Bethhany who is downstairs on the first floor at 4 22 am wait a minute.

00:21:40.526 --> 00:21:45.634
4, 22, that's like two minutes after staring down kohlberger.

00:21:45.634 --> 00:21:47.082
What is she texting?

00:21:47.082 --> 00:21:49.728
Yo girl, I just saw a dude in a mask.

00:21:49.728 --> 00:21:53.284
He might have killed everyone because I'd be smashing 911 fast.

00:21:53.284 --> 00:21:55.549
Right about that point now.

00:21:55.569 --> 00:22:04.153
Now you think that right, but the text unsealed March 6th of 2025, are panicked but vague.

00:22:04.153 --> 00:22:06.929
Dylan's like no one's answering.

00:22:06.929 --> 00:22:09.828
Then I'm really confused right now.

00:22:09.828 --> 00:22:12.480
And then you have Bethany texting back yeah, I know, but it's better than being alone.

00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:15.260
And then you have Bethany texting back yeah, I know, but it's better than being alone.

00:22:15.260 --> 00:22:22.522
Now, between 422 and 424, they swap 17 messages.

00:22:22.522 --> 00:22:29.844
Dylan's freaking out, saying she heard stuff, saw a guy, something like a ski mask on his head.

00:22:29.844 --> 00:22:32.444
Bethany's like run to my room.

00:22:32.444 --> 00:22:37.486
Dylan bolts downstairs and they hunker down together, but no 911.

00:22:37.486 --> 00:22:44.548
They're on Snapchat and Insta from 422 to 437, and then it's quiet until 8 am.

00:22:45.347 --> 00:22:46.407
Eight hours, babe.

00:22:46.407 --> 00:22:47.407
That really kills me.

00:22:47.407 --> 00:22:51.209
I mean they're Snapchatting while their friends are bleeding out upstairs.

00:22:51.209 --> 00:22:53.930
By 8 am they're back on their phones.

00:22:53.930 --> 00:22:57.290
Dylan texts Maddie and Kaylee at 1023.

00:22:57.290 --> 00:22:59.191
Please answer, are you up?

00:22:59.191 --> 00:23:01.051
Nobody replied, obviously.

00:23:01.051 --> 00:23:03.352
She calls her dad at 1140.

00:23:03.352 --> 00:23:04.811
Still no 911.

00:23:04.811 --> 00:23:06.712
Finally, 1158,.

00:23:06.712 --> 00:23:13.374
Someone might be a friend who showed up, uses Bethany's phone to call Dispatcher, gets something.

00:23:13.374 --> 00:23:16.634
Something has happened in our house.

00:23:16.634 --> 00:23:18.375
One of the roommates has passed out.

00:23:18.375 --> 00:23:21.215
She was drunk last night and she's not waking up.

00:23:21.215 --> 00:23:26.997
Then, oh, I saw a man last night, eight freaking hours ago.

00:23:28.018 --> 00:23:32.919
Now that 911 call audio released that you guys just heard.

00:23:32.919 --> 00:23:39.605
You hear that she's frantic, you hear her crying, you hear heavy breathing, the bones passed around and they're.

00:23:39.605 --> 00:23:43.094
It's like they don't even have a clue of what's up.

00:23:43.094 --> 00:23:50.433
Just that zanna is unresponsive, so we know her boyfriend, ethan, was in the same room with her.

00:23:50.433 --> 00:23:55.310
Now the cops roll up, find theath and it's game over.

00:23:55.310 --> 00:23:56.432
But why the delay?

00:23:56.432 --> 00:23:57.986
That's the million-dollar question.

00:23:59.400 --> 00:24:00.866
Yeah, I'm pissed just thinking about it.

00:24:00.866 --> 00:24:03.229
I mean, were they drunk, were they scared?

00:24:03.229 --> 00:24:08.170
Were they just occupied by, like, scrolling through their phones?

00:24:08.510 --> 00:24:09.251
Social media.

00:24:09.593 --> 00:24:23.748
Right, I mean they were like in their room, but still it just freaks me out that they seen a bushy, you know the dude in the mask.

00:24:24.088 --> 00:24:25.455
Just, it doesn't make much sense to me.

00:24:25.455 --> 00:24:26.259
No, it's not very simple either.

00:24:26.259 --> 00:24:35.749
Experts like this, uc Irvin psych professor Elizabeth Kaufman, quoted in a March 22nd CNN piece and it said it's all about your brain wiring.

00:24:35.749 --> 00:24:37.612
These girls are 1920.

00:24:37.612 --> 00:24:51.646
Their prefrontal cortex, the decision making part, isn't fully developed until they hit 25, so that fight flight freeze trigger mode takes over in panic.

00:24:51.646 --> 00:25:00.086
Dylan sees a killer, freezes brain, locks up Bethany's downstairs no clue what's real till Dylan is with her.

00:25:00.086 --> 00:25:03.968
They're texting, sure, but it's like they're processing, not acting.

00:25:04.789 --> 00:25:05.009
I mean.

00:25:05.009 --> 00:25:05.901
So what you think?

00:25:05.901 --> 00:25:08.410
They're just like paralyzed, froze up.

00:25:08.410 --> 00:25:14.563
I get being scared, but eight hours they're hitting up the socials calling dad, why not the po-po?

00:25:15.284 --> 00:25:21.849
Now court documents in ex-post say the defense is hammering this.

00:25:21.849 --> 00:25:23.090
Why did they wait?

00:25:23.090 --> 00:25:26.094
Some theories are being floated around.

00:25:26.094 --> 00:25:29.096
They thought it was a party gone wrong.

00:25:29.096 --> 00:25:32.501
Maybe Zanna passed out drunk, not dead.

00:25:32.501 --> 00:25:39.925
The 911 call mentions she was drunk last night, so maybe they didn't suspect a murder until later.

00:25:39.925 --> 00:25:44.561
Plus, moscow's like a Very laid-back, chill town.

00:25:44.561 --> 00:25:51.784
There's been no murders there in five to seven years, so you don't assume a massacre.

00:25:52.556 --> 00:25:53.439
That's fair to think.

00:25:53.439 --> 00:26:02.781
But Dylan saw the guy masked up creepy post-crying, that's not a fat bro stumbling home and blood was everywhere.

00:26:02.781 --> 00:26:05.163
I mean you'd think you'd even smell the blood.

00:26:05.163 --> 00:26:07.873
There was so much blood on this scene Maybe not First floor's far from the blood there was so much blood on this scene?

00:26:07.894 --> 00:26:12.563
Maybe not First floor's, far from the action, third floor's, where Kaylee and Maddie were.

00:26:12.563 --> 00:26:15.564
Second was Ethan and Zanna.

00:26:15.564 --> 00:26:32.561
Blood stayed upstairs, seeping through the walls, not flooding down Dylan's room's on two, but she locked herself in, ran to Bethany's on the first floor no reason to go upstairs until, you know, the friends came over.

00:26:32.561 --> 00:26:34.346
Now, fear is a hell of a drug.

00:26:34.346 --> 00:26:38.482
It could have kept them glued downstairs, hoping that it would sort itself out.

00:26:38.824 --> 00:26:41.938
Still awful wild to me, though, eight hours of hope.

00:26:41.938 --> 00:26:42.558
It's fine.

00:26:42.558 --> 00:26:45.585
I mean, kober's defense is eating this up.

00:26:45.585 --> 00:26:48.801
Mark's filings say they'll argue that the timeline is off.

00:26:48.801 --> 00:26:50.801
Maybe Dylan's story is shaky.

00:26:50.801 --> 00:26:53.123
Prosecutors want those texts in court.

00:26:53.123 --> 00:26:57.582
They say it's excited utterances, raw panic proving it's real.

00:26:57.582 --> 00:27:02.606
I think this time gap is going to be a big battle in Boise come August.

00:27:03.154 --> 00:27:03.816
Oh it will.

00:27:03.816 --> 00:27:08.001
The delays a gut punch to families.

00:27:08.001 --> 00:27:14.790
Like Steve Gonzalez are torn up wondering if faster action could have helped.

00:27:14.790 --> 00:27:17.939
But he said the kids died quick.

00:27:17.939 --> 00:27:24.029
No prolonged suffering, still eight hours, from 420 am to 1158 am.

00:27:24.029 --> 00:27:26.363
It's a mystery wrapped in trauma.

00:27:26.363 --> 00:27:32.587
Dylan and Bethany will testify and I'll bet the jury's going to grill this hard.

00:27:33.415 --> 00:27:38.807
You know, even though there was the big gap between seeing the masked up dude.

00:27:38.807 --> 00:27:39.608
You never know.

00:27:39.608 --> 00:27:45.468
Maybe they thought it was one of their friends playing a joke on them and maybe they were a little bit tipsy.

00:27:46.096 --> 00:27:46.540
Well, think about this.

00:27:46.540 --> 00:27:47.451
They're in college, they're all about this.

00:27:47.451 --> 00:27:50.240
They're in college, they're all hammered, they're all drunk.

00:27:50.240 --> 00:28:04.364
I mean a young college girl, 20 years old, drunker than hell, walking out of her room and seeing this dude with a mask on, she's like the fuck, is that?

00:28:04.364 --> 00:28:08.259
Turn around and go right back in her room, like was that real?

00:28:08.259 --> 00:28:13.167
Like maybe she thought she was hallucinating or hell, she could have ate some shrooms.

00:28:13.690 --> 00:28:21.528
You never know, maybe she was stoned, but you know, in no way are we saying that we think that this girl had anything to do with it.

00:28:21.595 --> 00:28:23.943
No, I don't think that the girls had anything to do with it.

00:28:23.943 --> 00:28:32.926
I genuinely think that they really had no clue what was going on, because, had they had a clue, these were their friends.

00:28:33.134 --> 00:28:35.202
Yeah, they were lifelong friends.

00:28:35.202 --> 00:28:36.539
A couple of them were together.

00:28:36.539 --> 00:28:40.424
My money is definitely on Kohlberger on this one.

00:28:40.515 --> 00:28:47.723
I mean, you do got the knife sheath with his DNA on it and his purchase receipts from where he bought the knife off.

00:28:47.903 --> 00:28:48.526
Amazon.

00:28:48.526 --> 00:28:49.587
That gets me too.

00:28:49.587 --> 00:28:51.179
I mean a criminologist.

00:28:51.179 --> 00:28:52.924
You're going to buy the knife.

00:28:52.924 --> 00:28:59.284
Obviously he didn't mean to leave the sheath there, but you would cover up your evidence more than that.

00:28:59.284 --> 00:29:01.884
Plus, you already know that there's cameras everywhere.

00:29:01.884 --> 00:29:03.000
They caught his car there.

00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:07.267
He turned off his phone when the murder was being committed.

00:29:07.267 --> 00:29:08.339
That's another point.

00:29:09.776 --> 00:29:22.728
Do you think they could have caught him just by with the identification of the Hyundai Elantra, or do you think they had to have the DNA on that knife sheath?

00:29:22.728 --> 00:29:26.939
The knife sheath is what sealed his fate, I think the knife sheath.

00:29:27.059 --> 00:29:28.605
They had to have it, like you said.

00:29:28.605 --> 00:29:36.229
You know he even got pulled over right here in our Hoosier State by Indiana State Police for speeding I think two times, with his father.

00:29:37.394 --> 00:29:42.907
Yeah, I think it was like two times within a mile or a couple of miles or something crazy like that, up on 70.

00:29:43.835 --> 00:29:50.769
I wonder if he was spending all the time with his family you know what I mean driving basically across country because he knew his ass was cooked.

00:29:50.769 --> 00:29:54.246
I bet that knife sheath was bugging the shit out of that dude.

00:29:55.275 --> 00:29:56.381
Oh, it was eating him up.

00:29:57.174 --> 00:30:18.676
I don't think he would have got caught if that knife sheath wasn't there fighting saying that it was basically an illegal search of the trash, because when you throw your trash out, it basically that you're discarding something that it's public, you know anybody can grab it and get the dna.

00:30:18.676 --> 00:30:21.680
So they tested the trash.

00:30:21.680 --> 00:30:31.076
They found his father's dna and then they went on the genealogy tip and found out that Brian Kohlberger was you know DNA.

00:30:31.076 --> 00:30:32.883
His dad said Matched it.

00:30:32.942 --> 00:30:37.265
Yes, exactly, and that he had a white Elantra too.

00:30:38.655 --> 00:30:40.423
I think his ass is cooked myself.

00:30:40.423 --> 00:30:43.624
Did they just reinstate the death penalty in Idaho?

00:30:44.215 --> 00:30:51.695
They did, and he's up for the death penalty penalty in Idaho.

00:30:51.715 --> 00:30:52.720
They did, and he's up for the death penalty.

00:30:52.720 --> 00:30:54.265
Also, they reintroduced the firing squad as the death penalty in Idaho.

00:30:54.265 --> 00:30:55.469
I think they let them pick.

00:30:55.469 --> 00:30:57.675
Maybe I was watching a news clip on that.

00:30:57.675 --> 00:31:01.705
But they're not letting people stand there and shoot the person no more.

00:31:01.705 --> 00:31:11.650
They're contemplating getting a mechanical device to shoot the person that's going to be executed with a death penalty.

00:31:11.650 --> 00:31:13.701
That would be weird, man.

00:31:13.701 --> 00:31:15.923
I don't think I would pick firing squad.

00:31:15.923 --> 00:31:18.242
What would you pick if you had the death penalty?

00:31:20.135 --> 00:31:21.382
Not the firing squad.

00:31:22.076 --> 00:31:23.442
I don't want to be shot again.

00:31:23.442 --> 00:31:27.445
I don't want to have one of them caps on my head and electrocuted either.

00:31:27.445 --> 00:31:29.319
I think I'd choose the chemical shit.

00:31:30.001 --> 00:31:31.586
Definitely Put me to sleep.

00:31:32.557 --> 00:31:36.215
What would you choose as your last supper, like your last dinner, I think?

00:31:36.215 --> 00:31:38.883
At most states you can get whatever you want.

00:31:38.883 --> 00:31:40.748
What would you choose?

00:31:40.748 --> 00:31:49.188
Let me guess yours, I'm going to say a Hot Pocket and a bowl of Captain Crunch cereal.

00:31:50.375 --> 00:31:51.662
Maybe Fruity Pebbles.

00:31:51.875 --> 00:31:54.483
What do you think I would have if I had one last supper?

00:31:55.076 --> 00:31:56.923
A ribeye, a baked potato and a salad.

00:31:57.255 --> 00:31:58.500
Damn, you know me so well.

00:31:58.500 --> 00:32:00.480
Some shrimp on the side, maybe.

00:32:01.584 --> 00:32:01.825
Yuck.

00:32:02.296 --> 00:32:10.307
Anyway, folks, that was pretty fun to talk about, but I do think that they're going to come to a plea.

00:32:10.307 --> 00:32:13.300
I don't think Brian Colbert is going to plea.

00:32:13.923 --> 00:32:14.746
Oh, he's not.

00:32:14.914 --> 00:32:16.039
He's going to take it all the way.

00:32:17.015 --> 00:32:20.566
Yeah, he thinks he can get away with this.

00:32:21.897 --> 00:32:22.945
Oh, I'll tell you one thing.

00:32:22.945 --> 00:32:29.156
That's pretty funny, though I noticed when they're showing him where they're doing all the motions in the court.

00:32:29.156 --> 00:32:44.006
Before the trial, when they first showed his picture, he took a selfie of himself I think it was the next day after the murders in his bathroom and his eyebrows were bushy as hell, kind of like Bert and Ernie, with a little bit of space in the middle.

00:32:44.006 --> 00:32:54.190
And then if you look at him now, they're like bleached blonde and they're all trimmed up like he's getting the eyebrow jobs in the joint, you know, to make them not look so bushy.

00:32:54.190 --> 00:33:00.920
I swear folks go look at it, Look at his selfie and then look at the current pictures of him in the courtroom Definitely bleached eyebrows.

00:33:01.663 --> 00:33:03.198
Oh yeah, what do you think they?

00:33:03.198 --> 00:33:05.164
How do you think they do it in the joint?

00:33:06.286 --> 00:33:06.606
Or do you?

00:33:06.626 --> 00:33:10.692
think his attorney's doing it when he gets to the courtroom.

00:33:11.075 --> 00:33:12.279
I bet his attorney's doing it.

00:33:12.279 --> 00:33:19.656
He probably bought him some shit to bleach him out and then probably run some clippers through him or something, because they're definitely different.

00:33:19.958 --> 00:33:21.040
No, they waxed him.

00:33:21.040 --> 00:33:26.357
His lawyer brought in some wax stuff.

00:33:26.357 --> 00:33:27.642
They are some wax stuff.

00:33:27.642 --> 00:33:29.666
They are definitely wax.

00:33:31.515 --> 00:33:33.878
Yeah, he's going down though.

00:33:33.878 --> 00:33:38.224
Another thing Brian Kohlberger was reportedly in a bar.

00:33:38.224 --> 00:33:41.950
Every time he goes to a bar like he was trying to womanize women.

00:33:45.878 --> 00:33:47.442
He's been kicked out of a few places up there.

00:33:47.442 --> 00:33:48.866
Oh, so, like a creepy stalker dude.

00:33:48.866 --> 00:33:49.848
Creepy stalker dude.

00:33:49.848 --> 00:33:57.204
I bet you he can't get a girlfriend and was like introverted, like that, to where he didn't really even speak to women.

00:33:58.615 --> 00:34:01.525
Well, he was kind of a goofy, nerdy looking dude, like we said.

00:34:01.525 --> 00:34:09.666
So I just wonder if maybe in his mind he just thought you know, these girls are really pretty and I bet you one of them shot him down at one point.

00:34:10.135 --> 00:34:13.956
He did follow one of them on social media, on Instagram Bam.

00:34:13.956 --> 00:34:14.639
I told you.

00:34:15.976 --> 00:34:17.141
Well, that kind of wraps it up.

00:34:17.141 --> 00:34:21.085
We will keep you updated on the trial and how it's going.

00:34:22.235 --> 00:34:28.485
Yep, it don't start till August, but there will be a lot of motions and limine and stuff like that up until then.

00:34:29.146 --> 00:34:33.166
Yep, and if you're around Morgan County, Indiana, stop in the Centerton gas station.

00:34:33.166 --> 00:34:35.635
Get you one of our badass 69 South t-shirts.

00:34:35.635 --> 00:34:38.885
It's on the corner of Rob Hill Road and 67.

00:34:38.885 --> 00:34:42.623
Everybody follow our Facebook page for our next episode.

00:34:42.623 --> 00:34:43.505
It's coming up quick.

00:34:43.505 --> 00:34:46.264
We've had quite a few people ask us to do this one.

00:34:48.315 --> 00:34:49.398
So we're just going to let you look it up.

00:34:49.398 --> 00:34:51.666
We're going to let it be a surprise.

00:34:53.436 --> 00:34:55.021
Until you find out what our next one is.

00:34:55.021 --> 00:34:57.110
Thank you for listening and have a good day.

00:35:12.643 --> 00:35:15.164
Take care, we'll see you next time.
